Keep Beneficial Bats Outside

We’re coming up on that time of year when pests that normally make their homes outside start craving a warmer environment to occupy when the weather turns cold.

Unfortunately, many beneficial creatures earn the “Pest” classification when they decide the warmer environment is your home.

Bats are among such creatures.

Throughout the spring and summer months, you will often see bats swooping near streetlights or over bodies of water, as the flying insects that come out at night – mainly moths and mosquitoes – make up the majority of their diets.

The most common bat in Georgia is the Brown Bat. Its body is only two to three inches long, but it has a wingspan of up to 11 inches. Gray bats and “nighttime bats” also are common in the Southeast, and all are insectivores, eating as many as 1,200 flying insects every hour!

So we don’t want to get rid of them, unless we want the insect populations to soar. What we want to do is ensure they don’t find a way into the house.

This is the best time of year to check for the small spaces along the roofline, entry areas for utility cables, and other crevices that would allow a bat easy entry into your home. Identify and seal all cracks – you can do the work yourself or call on a qualified handyman.

Stay tuned for more seasonal updates that will keep your home pest-free all year long!

Remember, call on the Pied Piper for all of your termite & pest control needs.

It’s Cockroach Season

Actually, most any time is roach season in Georgia, where our temperate, humid climate provides ideal living conditions for one of the most reviled household pests.

FACTS ABOUT COCKROACHES:

  • The three most common cockroaches in the U.S. Are the American, German and Oriental cockroaches.
  • Of these, only the American cockroach is capable of flight.
  • American cockroaches are also the largest of the three – ranging from 2.8 to 4.3 cm in length. Oriental cockroaches are slightly smaller, at 2.5 to 3.0 cm. German cockroaches are tiny in comparison, at 1.2 to 1.5 cm.
  • German cockroaches can live up to 9 months, while American and Oriental cockroaches may live up to 1 ½ years. Continue reading

Another Satisfied Customer

At Pied Piper Pest Control, the greatest compliment is a satisfied customer who refers their friends and neighbors to us. But it’s nice to hear from our customers, too. Here’s what customer S.C. Rankin of Marietta, GA, had to say recently:

Hoards of ants on the move … called the Pied Piper!  Vicious spiders lurking in the corners … called the Pied Piper again.  Bees in my office light fixtures — you guessed it, called the Pied Piper.  Been a happy customer for 10+ years and would rather fight that switch to another bug dude! ~ S. C. Rankin – Marietta, GA

Thanks, S.C. – You know you can call on the Pied Piper for all of your termite & pest control needs!

Yellow Jackets Are Back (and Not Just the Pigskin-Tossing Kind)

Doesn’t it just figure that when the weather begins to be pleasant enough to head outdoors again, the stinging – and I mean tear-inducing, cuss-inspiring, just-plain-MEAN stinging – insects decide to venture out and share our space?

If fire ants weren’t bad enough (we’ll talk about them in a few weeks), yellow jackets are about to be as significant a force as Brian Bohannon’s quarterback swarm sporting their athletic jerseys each Saturday this fall at Bobby Dodd Stadium!

Seriously, outdoor events can take a painful turn if you’re unaware of the habits of yellow jackets. With a few precautions, you can ensure that your tailgating, apple-picking, hiking, biking, yard-raking or socializing activities won’t be interrupted by a Continue reading

Tennis, Anyone?

You’re not likely to get a sting after an encounter with carpenter bees, but you may get a case of tennis elbow – because while it’s too hot for any but the most die-hard tennis enthusiasts to grab their rackets for a day on the courts (temperatures can hit 120 degrees or more out there!), many folks are reaching for the racket to play a game we call “Swat the Carpenter Bees.”

If you live in the South, you know what I’m talking about. Carpenter bees are about the same size as honeybees, but there are some notable differences: Continue reading

Legendary Leader in Community Involvement

Pied Piper Shows His Colors 4th of July in Woodstock

We’ve all hired companies to perform services for our homes or offices, but how many of those are actually a part of the community we live in? Chances are, if you have a question or a situation arises, you have to cut through a lot of red tape – or recorded phone messages – and still don’t get to talk to the person in charge.

At Pied Piper Pest Control, you can count on the highest quality customer service, because we live in the community we serve. You’re likely to see your service technician having dinner in the same restaurant as you (makes you feel better about eating there, doesn’t it?), or shopping in the same stores you do in our community.

And best of all, we give back to our community by supporting the causes and organizations that are important to you as well.

If you saw the 4th of July Parade in Downtown Woodstock, you saw the Pied Piper team greeting customers, shaking hands and giving candy to the kids (which we hope they either ate or stored in a sealed container. Don’t need ants, you know!)

And this Saturday – July 23 – you’ll find an entire team of Pied Piper Pest Control staff, customers and friends proudly wearing their “Follow Me – I’m the Pied Piper” t-shirts as they participate in the 16th Annual Etowah River Run, Benefiting the Anna Crawford Children’s Center/Cherokee Child Advocacy Council.

The Pied Piper

Look for the Pied Piper himself to be cheering on his team this Saturday. And if you’ve got a pest question or a bug situation, you can trust your Cherokee County neighbor, the PiedPiper – the Legendary Leader in Pest Control!

Dog Days of Summer Bring FLEAS

The hot, humid days of summer find many of us retreating to the cooler temperatures of our air-conditioned homes and offices, which we often share with our four-legged companions.

But oftentimes our four-legged friends bring six-legged hitch-hikers commonly known as FLEAS.

They don’t only set Fido or Fluffy to scratching – these tiny parasites will feast on anything that has blood – including humans.

Adult females feed on the blood of their host, then lay their eggs, which can hatch in as little as two weeks (or as long as six months!). Unchecked, you, your pets and your home can be infested in a very short period of time.

How do you go about keeping the flea population in check? Follow a few simple steps from the Pied Piper:

  • Wash pet bedding regularly in hot, soapy water
  • Bathe your pet regularly as well, using one of the many flea-repelling shampoos on the market
  • Treat your pets for fleas with drops or oral preventative, available through your veterinarian
  • Call the professionals at Pied Piper Pest Control to treat inside and outside your home to help combat flea populations – 770-592-9814

The warm, humid environment in Georgia provides a fabulous breeding ground for fleas. Animals that are beyond your reach include squirrels, mice, rabbits and other people’s pets that carry their own flea colonies and may wander onto your property.

While flea populations cannot be completely eradicated, Pied Piper Pest Control will work with you to control your pests and help you enjoy a more pest-free summer.

    If You Feed ‘Em

    Tracey and The Pied Piper

Let’s face it – we live in the South, and critters, creepy crawlers and bugs are a part of our lives.

As far as termites go, the trained, certified pest control professionals of Pied Piper Pest Control can help you keep them out of your house, saving you thousands in repair or replacement costs from the damage they can cause.

By the way you cannot get repair-replace treatment once you have termite damage, so it is important to make sure your home is treated during construction, if possible, and at the very least regularly once the house is built. Our bait systems, when properly maintained, are your best defense against termite infestation and the resulting damage. Continue reading
